martial art
is any skill that can be applied in warfare.
The word martial means “military.”
Thus, a martial art is a military art. The martial
arts are popular in many parts of the world
today as a means of self-defense, law enforcement
tactics, competitive sports, and exercises for
physical fitness.
Jiu-jitsu
The term Jujitsu, translated as “ju”
(gentle) and “jitsu” (technique),
is an ancient Japanese martial art that incorporates
yielding and using the opponent’s energy
to your advantage. This style includes joint
locking or arresting techniques as well as forms
of escape, throws, takedowns, and various defenses.
Judo
Judo comes to us from the fighting system of
Japan. Founded in 1882 by Dr. Jigaro Kano, Judo
is a refinement of the ancient martial art Jujitsu.
Judo is best known for its spectacular throwing
techniques but also involves considerable grappling
on the ground utilizing choking techniques.
Judo has emphasis on safety, and full physical
activity for top conditioning.
Kobudo
Kobudo is an art that utilizes weaponry for
competition and self defense purposes. Like
all of martial arts Kobudo requires a great
deal of concentration and patience.
Karate
Karate is a system of fighting using the hands,
knees, and elbows as weapons. Karate was developed
on the island of Okinawa from the 17th century
and brought to Japan in the early 20th century.
Karate is a high risk, high yield martial art
with an emphasis on maximizing the damage caused
by each strike by harnessing every possible
once of physical and mental leverage to exceed
the normal limitations of the practitioner.
